Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Beginners Courses

    Answers to some common questions...

Q.1 I've never danced before, which classes should I take?

Take one of our Lindy Hop beginners courses, no experience needed! These courses run at various venues around Perth. You'll have a one-hour class, once a week, for 4-6 weeks (depending on the venue). By the end of the course you'll know all the important basics of Lindy Hop, and be able to get up on the dancefloor and swing out! Check the Classes & Courses page for details of the next beginners course in your area.

Q.2 What should I wear or bring to class?

Wear loose, cool, comfortable clothing, and shoes that you are comfortable to dance in. For men, fully closed shoes like sneakers or leather dress shoes are fine. For ladies, flat enclosed shoes like sneakers, tennis shoes or ballet flats are perfect. Bring a bottle of water, and you may like to bring a hand towel if you sweat a lot.

Q.3 What happens when I finish a Beginners Course?

Once you have completed a Beginners Course at any of our venues, you can move on to Lindy Level 2 classes. You are also welcome to repeat the Beginners Course, if you want to get a solid grasp of the foundations before moving on. Many people like to do both - repeat the Beginners Course, at the same time as starting to take Lindy Level 2 classes. If you're not sure if you're ready to move on to Level 2, why not take a private lesson with one of our instructors?

Q.4 Do I need to book for Beginners Courses?

Look at the description on the Classes & Courses page, to see if you need to book for any particular course. For most Swing Zing courses, there is no need to book, you can just show up at the first scheduled class. However, we run some classes through external recreation programs, and they sometimes require you to book through their system. So just check the description to be sure.

Q.5 Do I need a partner for Swing Zing classes?

By all means, bring along a partner if you have one, but don't worry if you can't find anyone! All classes rotate partners, so you'll get to dance with lots of different people every class (a great way to meet new people, plus it's the best way to learn!)

Q.6 I missed Week 1 of a Beginners Course, can I still start the course in Week 2?

Yes, not a problem! Come along to week 2 and just let the desk staff know you missed the first week. The week 2 class revises everything from the first week, and though it might move a little faster, you should be able to pick it all up!

Q.7 Do classes run on public holidays?

Yes, classes run every week including public holidays. It's a great way to socialise and top off a relaxing weekend!

  2. Private Lessons

Questions about taking a private one-on-one lesson with a Swing Zing instructor:

Q.1 Why should I take a private lesson?

With focused one-on-one tuition, you will learn a lot faster than in a group class. Private lessons can help you reach your potential at a faster rate. The instructor will customise your private lesson to focus on your dancing specifically, or a particular aspect you might request, so you will cover a lot more in a single private lesson than in group classes. Some of our students suggest that in one private lesson, you might cover as much material or improve your dancing as much as you would in four weeks of group classes. Of course, we recommend group classes as well - the best way to meet other dancers and socialise - but private lessons are definitely the fast track!

Q.2 How do private lessons work?

You can take a private lesson with any Swing Zing instructor. You can have one with just one Swing Zing instructor (eg: just Jessie), or you may like to have one with a teaching couple (eg: with Sophie and Greg). You can take the private lesson on your own, or with a partner, or even up to four people. The cost of the private will be the same, regardless of whether it's just you, or you divide it between 2, 3 or 4 people. Obviously, the less students, the more focused attention you will each get. You can have a private lesson on a particular topic of your choice (eg: "I want to learn how to dance faster", or "I want to improve my spins"), or you can let the instructor have a look at your dancing, and they will give you some topics to work on. Most private lessons are 30 minutes to 2 hours long, your choice. The cost is $30 for a half hour, or $50 per hour (per instructor).

Q.3 How do I book a private lesson?

You can arrange your private lesson with your chosen instructor directly, or simply contact Sophie on 0421 514 528 or info@swingzing.com

  3. Performances

Some common questions about hiring Swing Zing to perform at your event:

Q.1 What sort of performances/shows do you offer?

We can customise a performance to suit your event and budget. The most common types of performances we do include one of (or a combination of) these things:

    1. Swing dance floor shows (5-15 minutes long): a set show with a variety of dance numbers, in swing styles from the 1920s, 30s and 40s. We can customise a floorshow from our repertoire to suit your event format. 2. Social dancing: if you have a dancefloor at your event, you can hire Swing Zing dancers in vintage 1940s costume to dance to your live band (or we can bring our own swing music on CD). No set routines, just social dancing! Creates a great social atmosphere! 3. Swing Dance Lesson: Why not have a fun introductory swing dance lesson as part of your event? We can run a fun and easy dance class for your guests, perfect for all ages, and no experience needed. It's a great way to encourage your guests onto the dancefloor, and get them dancing the night away.

Q.2 How much does it cost to hire Swing Zing for a performance?

This will depend on the length and complexity of the performance, the number of dancers required, and the travelling distance to the performance. We are able to customise a performance from our repertoire to suit any event (and any budget). Please contact Swing Zing on 0421 514 528 or info@swingzing.com to get a quote for a performance at your event.
