If you want to learn Balboa, this is the perfect place to start!

Join experienced instructors Monique and Danika teaching a 6 week beginner block of Balboa in April and May.

What's Balboa you ask? Well it’s another type of swing dance that was invented in South California in packed out dance halls. For that reason it takes up much less space, is easier to dance to fast music, and you get to express all or creativity and musicality below you with fancy feet.

Sign ups are now open for this block.

FAQ's
Q: Can I come even though I have two left feet?
A: Absolutely! This class is specifically for complete beginners and we love a challenge! We'll get you grooving in no time.

Q: Do I need a partner?
A: Nope! We rotate partners so you can come by yourself or with a friend.

Q: How much?
A: The course is $94 for the 6 week block.

Q: Where and when are the classes?
A: 6.30pm on Thursday nights at the Mount Hawthorn Community Centre (Lesser Hall)

Q: What dates are the classes?
A: April 18th and 25th, May 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd

Q: Do I need to attend every class?
A: If you miss 1 or 2 classes, you will still be able to get through the entire block but you'll get the most out of it if you attend all classes as we will be progressing from one week to the next.

Q: What should I wear?
A: Anything you like as long as you're comfortable. Backless/strapless tops are not ideal though.

Swing Zing's 20th Birthday Party - Workshops and Social

Swing Zing has reached an amazing milestone and will be turning 20 years old in 2024!

We all know how hard we partied in our 20s, so this will be one wild party you don't want to miss out on.

Workshops

11.15am @ The Chapel Space
Air step class! Charlotte and Jethro are back teaching aerials again. Recap/learn a few fundamentals to warm up then learn a couple of air steps you can train and throw down in the next jam circle.

12:45pm Lunch Break

1:15pm @ The Chapel Space
Lindy 3 workshop. Charlotte and Jethro are cooking up some fun and challenging ideas for this class.

2:30pm Break

2:45pm @ The Chapel Space
Open level Balboa workshop. If you’ve been hanging out for some Bal, here’s your chance! Fi and Jethro will help you freshen up those balboa moves

4pm End of workshops

Social

North Perth Town Hall doors open 6.30pm for a fun, open level taster class. Then it’s social dancing from 7.15!

We will be providing some food (and cake!) but feel free to bring a plate of nibbles to share if you like.

Social dancing, good times and maybe even a few party games to celebrate 20 years of teaching Swing Dancing in Perth.

Event will be finishing at 10pm so make sure you arrive early enough to get enough dancing in before then.

FAQ

How much?
Workshops are $25 each, the social is $10. Or all 3 workshops plus the social for $70

What level is the aerials class?
We will attempt to make the aerials class accessible for any skill level by offering beginner intermediate and advanced options. However due to the nature of these moves, for your safety we do require all participants to be physically capable enough. If you can walk around while giving a friend a piggy back or carry them in your arms, you will be capable enough to participate in the air-steps class.

What level is the Lindy Hop classes?
This is an advanced class. If you have been in intermediate classes for a number of years and you know about musical phrasing, high information vs low information leading/following and adding solo jazz steps into your social dancing, then this is the class for you.

What level is the Balboa class?
We will be teaching intermediate and advanced content in this class. We will not have time to teach the absolute basics though. So if you know how to do a single time basic (the down basic) and a delayed time basic (the up basic) you are welcome to join class.
If you do not know these basics but are an experienced dancer, teach yourself the fundamentals before the workshop (there’s lots of online resources) and you’ll be welcome to join in.

Where are the workshops?
The Chapel Space is a venue space in North Perth. There is street parking but make sure you give yourself a little extra time to park up and walk down. Sometimes parking can be a little tricky.
117 Angove St, North Perth WA 6006

Where is the social?
We’ll be in the North Perth Town Hall, main hall, 26 View St, North Perth WA 6006.

June Swing Dance classes

Friends! Monique and Charlotte are taking the reigns for the month of June and we're excited!!!
This month we'll be exploring with you what it means to be a swing dancer, not just a lindy hopper

For our wonderful level 1s that means continuing to grow your moves vocab and developing those leading and following techniques.

For those in our second classes, it's all about moving and grooving to the music and breaking free of what is and isn't Lindy, let's just swing.

Added BONUS THIS MONTH!

We'll be throwing in some Bal Shots* and Hair Wrap Tutorials between our classes! Here's what that looks like!

6:30pm - Beginner Lindy Hop
7:30pm - Social Dancing
7:45pm - Hair wrap tutorial (Weeks 1 & 5), Bal shots* (weeks 2,3 & 4)
8:00pm - Swing Dancing (min level 2 experience encouraged)

* What's a Bal Shot? It's a short 15min Balboa Taster class! Perfect if you've been wanting to learn but not sure if it's for you.

Remember!

Complete Beginners welcome!
No Bookings Required!
No Partner Necessary!

Welcome back friends! We're looking forward to getting into the nitty gritty of Lindy with you over the next 4 weeks!

All four weeks will start off with Lindy 1 classes which are beginner friendly and geared towards our newer dancers (or experienced dancers who want to learn a new role or work on their basics) to get you feeling good and ready for Social dancing!

Weeks 1-4 - Lindy 1 from 6:30pm

The 7.30pm class structure will be a bit different this month:

Weeks 1 & 2 - Lindy 2 from 7:40pm

Weeks 3 & 4 - Lindy 3 from 7:40pm

After working on some solid foundations with Kelly and & Josh, we're going to build on that, work on some sweet, sweet moves, and get all nerdy about some of that technique!

Queer Swing

FRIENDS! Have you wanted to give swing dancing a go but didn't quite know where to start? Here's your chance

While Swing Zing's spaces are welcoming and inclusive to all, sometimes it's nice to take those first triple steps somewhere familiar where you can be yourself! Monique and Charlotte are here for your intro into Lindy Hop! Be prepared to have some some fun and shenanigans!

Do I need to BYO partner? Nope! The great thing about swing dancing is that it's a social dance. A big part of it being able to ask anyone and everyone for a dance

Do I need to have dance experience? Absolutely not! I mean having a bit a rhythm doesn't hurt but that's why we're here!

Do I need special clothes/shoes? Not really. As long as you're comfortable and can move around. It can be an athletic dance so you want to be able to move around. If heels are your vibe and non negotiable, try some short chunky ones Remember this is a connected partner dance so there is that.

Is there a specific role I have to do based on some outdated notion of gender? OMFG ABSOLUTELY NOT AND THIS IS A BIG PART OF WHY WE WANT TO DO THIS CLASS! Sorry, we have a lot of feelings about this. We know that there have been situations where people have been made to feel like that and we want to completely and totally dispel this notion. Leading and following are roles differentiated by skill sets, and many of our teachers and students do both

How much for the classes? We recognise that we all have different means and we want EVERYONE to be able to join in and have fun times! Class rates will be on a sliding scale of 0$-$20 - pay what you can Cash and card accepted.
